Hot Take: Khamzat Chimaev will Have 2 Belts in 2 Years
Updated: Sep 8, 2020
Full disclosure - I can't pronounce this guy's name nor can I consistently spell it correctly without double checking the internet. That being said, what he accomplished in his UFC debut Wednesday night was nothing short of amazing and the Middleweight and Welterweight divisions were put on notice.
Key number of the night: 1
That's how many significant strikes his opponent John Phillips was able to land in 2 rounds. I know this is casual dude talk, but if you were to ask the average male if they could land 2 clean shots on a UFC fighter in under 7 minutes I am pretty sure the majority of answers would be a resounding yes. That is not the case here though:
Above: Gold denotes total strikes thrown while blue is for significant strikes landed.
So what does that mean as far as fighter averages go? When comparing his significant strikes delivered to time in the octagon, Chimaev is far more efficient than the average fighter while his opponent falls close to the trend line.
Reversing the logic and comparing the amount of damage taken, Phillips tends to absorb more strikes than the average fighter.
