A Tale of 2 Washingtons
Updated: Sep 8, 2020
This week we were gifted with not one but 2 major league changes. The first being the NHL addition of the Seattle Kraken and the second being the name change to the team formerly known as the Washington Redskins. Let react.
The Seattle Kraken:
Love almost everything about this. The color scheme is clean, the team name is unique, and its in an area that could use more sports. If I could change one thing, it would be the logo. Overall I do not dislike it, I just prefer earlier designs that were floating around when the team was announced.
It will be difficult to live up to the expectations that Vegas set. I their first year, Vegas built a championship caliber team, mastered the fan experience, and managed to bring their unique culture to the NHL. I don't think we will ever see an expansion team enter a league so flawlessly as Vegas did but I am excited for the new addition.
The Washington Football Team:
I fucking love this. I may be the only sports writer in the country that thinks this is perfect, I am also the least qualified. Coincidence? Never. I mapped out US professional sports teams below based off of a Wikipedia page. Do you see a team named "The Football Team"? No you don't. Do you know why? Because team owners seem to be obsessed with Wizard of Oz.
While up front this may just seem like a huge "fuck you" to the people advocating for a name change (and as a giver of "fuck you"'s I am definitely a fan), this name carries so much meaning about the area it represents: generic, uninspiring, and lazy.
Long live the Washington Football Team.
